Ramanathapuram: Fishermen of the coastal hamlets found a massive dead whale washed ashore on Valinokkam beach in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday morning.
The fishermen informed the forest officials who rushed to the spot and assessed the situation. The dead marine mammal was 20.2m and weighed a whopping seven tonnes.
Blue whale washed ashore dead in Tamil Nadu Forest Range Officer, Sikkandar Basha said that the whale would have died one month ago. "We are conducting a spot postmortem led by veterinarian Bhagat Singh. We will be able to ascertain the cause of death once the postmortem report is obtained", he said.
After the postmortem, two earthmovers were used to bury the carcass on the beach.
