Anna University introduces philosophy as part of 3rd semester course for Engineering students

Anna University Vice-Chancellor MK Surappa addressing a press conference said that the varsity has introduced 'Philosophy' as part of the third-semester course for B. Tech. and M. Tech. students. However, the curriculum will come into effect by 2020.

Chennai (Tamil Nadu):Anna University on Thursday introduced 'Philosophy' as part of the third-semester course for B. Tech. and M. Tech. students here.

While addressing a presser, Vice-Chancellor MK Surappa said, "I'll speak to my colleague in IST (Information Science and Technology) department that there must be a choice. This will be implemented in the next batch."

"We are ensuring to the entire state that philosophy is not compulsory for every student. So, people need not worry about it. We will amend the compulsory rule soon," he added.

Speaking to reporters, Anna University Vice-Chancellor Surappa said, "We are planning to introduce 12 subjects, including the Philosophical Culture and Humanities. All India Technical Academy has offered 22 subjects as optional subjects. Students must choose five out of 22 subjects."

As per the course of Anna University, the students have also been suggested to study the Upanishads, Srimad Bhagavad Gita, Vedas, Plato, and Francis Bacon, 'to create a new understanding and develop human ethics by learning philosophy through a comparison of Indian and Western traditions'.

The curriculum will come into effect by 2020.
