Siblings reunite after 72 years, thank social media

Ranjit Singh, a resident of Raisinghnagar, got in contact with his sister after 72 years with the help of a Facebook page. Both siblings got separated during the Kashmir tribal invasion when they were kids.

Sri Ganganagar:A family from Rajasthan was reunited after staying apart for over 70 years with the aid of social media platforms.

In 1947, during Kashmir tribal invasion, the family of Ranjit Singh, resident of Raisinghnagar, was separated. While Ranjit's grandfather Matwal Singh, along with other family members stayed back in India, his 4-year-old sister Bhajjo with other members left for Pakistan, when chaos erupted during that time.

With the help of a social media group run by writer and social activist Romi Sharma, Ranjit was able to get in contact with his sister.

"Ranjit Singh approached me and told me about his estranged sister. After that, I recorded his voice and posted the voice note in the Facebook group called ‘Romi Sharma Poonchi-Apna Poonchi Parivaar’.

After a few days with the help a group member, Ranjit got in touch with Bhajjo," told Harpal Singh who helped Ranjit and introduced the Facebook group to him.

In a video call with his sister, Ranjit got to know that Bhajjo (now Sakina) married a sheikh and is a mother of four children, leading a happy life.

Both the families are soon going to meet at Kartarpur Corridor.

'Romi Sharma Poonchi-Apna Poonchi Parivaar’ is a facebook page which was created last year in October with an aim to reunite families separated during the 1947 partition.
