SC agrees to examine plea challenging acquittal of four accused in 2008 Jaipur serial blasts case

The plea filed by widow of one of the victims in the serial bomb blasts was heard by a division bench of Justices Abhay S. Oka and Rajesh Bindal.

Jaipur: The Supreme Court has agreed to examine a plea challenging the Rajasthan High Court's decision to acquit four accused in the 2008 serial blasts in Jaipur. A division bench of Justices Abhay S. Oka and Rajesh Bindal on Friday agreed to examine the plea filed by Rajeshwari Devi, widow of one of the victims in the serial bomb blasts that had rocked Jaipur on May 13, 2008.

The petitioner has alleged that the acquittal of the convicted accused persons had been made “on the basis of gross misapplication of law by the High Court”. The apex court has also sought the response of the acquitted persons in the case by May 17. The Supreme Court, while directing the lower court to call for the records of the bomb blast case, however said that at this stage the decision of the High Court cannot be stayed.

An order in this regard will be considered only after the record is made available by the lower court. It can be recalled that the Rajasthan High Court acquitted the four accused Saifur alias Saifur Rahman, Mohammad Sarwar Azmi, Mohammad Saif alias Karian and Mohd. Salman in the serial bomb blasts case on Mar. 29.

The bomb blast victims have challenged the order of the High Court acquitting the accused in the case. The accused Mohammad Salman, Sarwar Azmi and Shahbaz Hussain had filed a caveat in the court to hear their side in the case. Pertinently, at least 71 people were killed while over 180 others were injured in the May 13 serial bomb blasts in Jaipur.
