Rajasthan women weave their self-reliance through charkha

The Ambedkar Vikas Samiti at Chaumoo village in Jaipur has helped rural women weave their self-reliance story through the wheels of charkha. At least 250 rural women are earning their livelihoods from the organisation.

Jaipur: Once a symbol of India’s freedom struggle, the charkha is now becoming the basis of economic independence of rural women in Rajasthan.

The Ambedkar Vikas Samiti at Chaumoo village in Jaipur is empowering the rural women financially. In other words, these women are truly weaving the story of an Atma Nirbhar Bharat.

At least 250 rural women are earning their livelihoods by operating a charkha. This is improving not only the economic condition of their families, but they are also becoming stronger by realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of a self-reliant India and Vocal for Local.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Dr Sangeeta Verma, the product designer, said that this organisation was established in 2007 and since then it has been helping rural women earn their livelihoods.

She said that clothes made by them here are sold through Khadi stores and exhibitions.

Meanwhile, the organisation's secretary Ramjilal Verma said that rural women also get trained to spin yarn on traditional as well as normal charkha.

"We make at least 70 items, such as quilts, bedsheets, sheet covers and so on. For this, 250 women are registered in the organisation, out of which 85 women are employed and 30 women work on charkha every day," he said.

He further said cotton fabric costing up to Rs 50 lakhs are manufactured here which are exhibited in different exhibitions organised by the central government and the Rajasthan government.

The women working at Ambedkar Vikas Samiti said that earlier they were confined only to daily household works. When they came to know that they could get a job of spinning, they stepped out of their houses and joined the organisation.
