NLU Jodhpur student death case: SC gives Rajasthan govt deadline of 2 months to complete probe

Asking the reason behind the delay in the probe, Supreme Court has directed the Rajasthan Police to complete the investigation into the August 2017 death case of Vikrant Nagaich, who was a 3rd-year student at National Law University Jodhpur, within two months. The court was hearing a plea filed by the mother of the victim who wanted the investigation to be transferred from Rajasthan police to the CBI.

New Delhi:The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Rajasthan government to complete the investigation into a three-year-old death case of a National Law University (NLU) Jodhpur student within two months.

During the hearing, a bench led by Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman had issued notice to the Rajasthan government in the case questioning why the investigation has not progressed since the student's death in 2017.

The apex court was hearing a petition filed by the mother of the student who wanted the probe to be transferred from state police to the Crime Branch Investigation (CBI).

She contended that the state investigation agencies have failed to register an FIR for 10 months after the incident and it ultimately registered on insistence but very reluctantly.

"Despite the lapse of almost three years, no charge sheet has been filed. The investigation is at a standstill, with no effort made to apprehend the offenders," alleged the petitioner.

She further asserted that she and her husband have already knocked on every door possible in search of justice and have collected all the material evidence and extended help in their capacity but still, they have been denied a 'fair and impartial investigation' and therefore they want the top court to resolve the issue without any further delay.

Vikrant Nagaich, a third-year law student of NLU, Jodhpur, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in August 2017.
