Bhiwadi (Rajasthan): Man committed suicide after the proposed wedding of his daughter was called off over dowry deficit.
According to police sources, a 50-year-old man, identified as Kailash Singh on November 21, allegedly committed suicide at Padla village in Rajasthan's Rewadi district by hanging himself from a ceiling fan.
Singh's daughter on Monday lodged a complaint with Rewadi police station alleging her father committed suicide after the proposed wedding snapped.
As per the complaint, the deceased suffered from depression after the wedding was called off. Singh left home on November 20 and did not return.
At around 7 am on November 21, Singh was found hanging inside the office of his brother-in-law, Chetram at Padla village.
The deceased's family alleged that he was constantly harassed by the boy's family as they wanted more dowry for marriage.
Ram Shankar, IIC, Bhiwadi police station, told ETV Bharat that the police have recovered a suicide note, purportedly written by Singh, from the spot. According to the police, the deceased had mentioned his state of mind in the suicide note.
"We found a suicide note, where he has mentioned that he was constantly harassed by his daughter's would-be in-laws over dowry. His daughter's marriage was fixed on November 25 but he could not arrange the hefty amount of money for it. And now the deceased's daughter has lodged a complaint against the boy's family. We have started an investigation into the incident," said Ram Shankar.
The police have registered a case of dowry harassment, abetment to suicide and other relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act.
