Ludhiana school student develops app for donation of books

Bhakti Sharma, a class seven student from Ludhiana, has developed a mobile application named 'PUSTAK' which allows people to donate books they no longer need so that someone else requiring the books can make use of them.

Ludhiana (Punjab): With many children struggling to find books amidst the nationwide lockdown, a school girl from Punjab's Ludhiana has developed a mobile application that provides a solution to the issue.

Bhakti Sharma, a class seven student of the Manav Rachna International School, has developed the 'PUSTAK' app, which allows people to donate books they no longer need, so people who require them can use them instead.

Bhakti said she stumbled across the idea for the app, after her brother was finding trouble finding a particular book during the lockdown.

She then started working towards the app, with help from her father and teachers.

"My father gave a lot of creative ideas, while my teachers provided guidance," Bhakti said, adding that she would work on the app in the time she had left after her daily studies.

Explaining about the app, Bhakti said that a person willing to donate a book, will just have to fill in his or her details on a small form.

A receiver will be able to browse through categories to find a particular book, and if available, will be connected to the donor.

Bhakti's father said that she spent close to two hours everyday on her app, and it took her around 12 days to develop the app. He added that instead of selling away used books, people can instead donate them to someone in need.

The basic purpose of the app is that no kid should be deprived of education for the want of books," he said.
