Gurudwara Sahib Thanda Burj: Place where young Sahibzadas held onto their faith

ETV Bharat arrived at Gurudwara Sahib Thanda Burj to trace the tale of betrayal and conspiracy against Guru Gobind's family. The estranged sons of the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh along with their mother were held captive in a bone-chilling cold fort in Fatehgarh region by the Mughal army.

Fatehgarh Sahib (Punjab): Gurudwara Sahib Thanda Burj, the place where the estranged mother and two children of tenth Sikh guru, Guru Gobind Singh were imprisoned by the Mughal army.

ETV Bharat arrived at Gurudwara Sahib Thanda Burj in Fatehgarh Sahib of Punjab, to trace the events before the battle of Chamkaur. It was here at the Thanda Burj, that the Sahibzada Zorawar Singh, Sahibzada Fateh Singh along with Mata Guru Ji were imprisoned, following a tip-off from the part-time cook in Guru Gobind's household- Gangu brahmin.

Gangu had stolen the gold coins from Mata Guru ji and later decided to turn them over to the Mughal army, fearing the suspicion of theft is being directed against him.

They were kept in the 'cold fort', during the extreme cold during the winters without proper food or clothing. An artificial water stream flowing beneath the base of the fort keeps it cool throughout the year and becomes a place of chilling cold during the winter months.

Wazir Khan, the Governor of Sirhind, a Mughal territory, summoned the two Sahibzadas several times when they were held captive. It is widely regarded that the two Sahibzadas had to undergo intense torture as the Mughals wanted to convert them into Islam. The young Sahibzadas endured atrocities by the Mughal army and held onto their faith.

After leaving Anandpur Sahib and the Anandgarh Fort, the Tenth Guru, along with his family and an army of followers reached the banks of river Sarsa on the intervening night of December 21, 1704, Guru Gobind Singh's family got separated.

While the two elder sons and the band of Sikh warriors remained with the Guru, his mother and two younger sons were left alone.

In a bid to commemorate the sacrifice made by the two Sahibzadas and Mata Guru Ji, a Gurudwara named 'Sahib Thanda Burj' was erected at the site beside the cold fort in Fatehgarh Sahib.
