Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib: Where the two young Sahibzadas embraced death

Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib is dedicated to the two youngest Sahibzadas, Sahibzada Baba Zorawar Singh, aged 9, and Sahibzada Baba Fateh Singh, aged 7 who faced immurement by Wazir Khan. After being brutally tortured, when the two young ones stood their ground, their integrity irked Khan. Khan later sentenced them to death.

Sirhind (Punjab):After being shifted from Kotwali Sahib to Gurudwara Shri Fatehgarh Sahib, the two youngest Sahibzadas, Sahibzada Baba Zorawar Singh, aged 9, and Sahibzada Baba Fateh Singh, aged 7 faced immurement when they refused to convert to Islam.

Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib: Where the two young Sahibzadas embraced death

The two younger Sahibzadas, along with their grandmother Mata Gujari, were imprisoned in the Thanda Burj, the Cold Tower, during extreme winter in the month of December (Poh). They were often summoned by Wazir Khan, the Governor or the Fauzdar of Sirhind, and made to appear in his court.

After facing gruesome torture, the Sahibzadas stood their ground to embrace martyrdom which was too much for the proud Wazir Khan to bear.

He declared the two young ones as 'enemies of the state' and ruled that both be immured.

The Sahibzadas spent their last night with their brave and courageous grandmother, Mata Gujari steadfast in their resolve to sacrifice their lives without yielding to injustice and cruelty.

The next morning, the two Sahibzadas were taken to be bricked up alive. Their grandmother then, donned them up Neela-Banas, the Blue Clothes, the colour of fortitude and sacrifice in Sikhism, and pinned a Kalgi each on their Dastaars—small turbans—and bid them goodbye.

The two young boys were bricked in alive, however, the wall fell which infuriated Khan.

Khan then ruled to slit the throats of both the children, who were in a semi-conscious state.

The two Sahibzadas embraced death and this place is now called Gurudwara Shri Fatehgarh Sahib.

In the next stage of our pilgrimage, called Safar E Shahadat, we shall take you another historical place, which is Gurudwara Bibangarh Sahib.
