ETV Bharat impact: NGT takes action for pollution on Punjab's Buddha Nullah

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken action against eight officials of the Municipal Corporation for their inaction on controlling pollution on Punjab's Buddha Nullah. The pollution in the drain has reportedly caused distress to multiple villages across its bank.

Ludhiana: Following multiple reports from ETV Bharat on impact of polluted Buddha Nullah on adjoining villages, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has registered a case against six including the mayor and commissioner of the municipal corporation in Punjab.

The NGT also pulled up the Punjab pollution control board, who have now registered a case for polluting Buddha Nullah, which drains into Satluj river as well as the groundwater.

A Sewage Treatment Plant operating on the banks of the drain, is releasing untreated pollutants into the flow, causing harmful diseases for the villagers depending on the groundwater in the region.

According to villagers, several requests were made to clean the drain however, no action was taken by the municipal authorities.

It is noteworthy that on May 1, an NGT team visited STP in Jamalpur, and it was revealed during the visit that ST plant was closed.

Besides, ETV Bharat has started the initiative of taking water samples from each village ,assess the contamination level and submission of a memorandum to Chief Minister of Punjab.

The mayor and other officers of the municipal corporation have been granted bail by the Ludhiana district court on Thursday.
