Odisha: Rath Yatra culminates as chariots reach Gundicha temple

The chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balbhadra and Goddess Subhadra reached Gundicha temple marking the culmination of the famous Rath Yatra in Odisha. For the second year in a row, the yatra was conducted without devotees amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Puri:Lord Jagannath's Nandighosa Rath reached the Gundicha temple on Monday evening, marking the culmination of the Rath Yatra on Monday. The chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balbhadra and Goddess Subhadra reached the temple. For the second year in a row, the yatra was conducted without devotees and following all Covid-19 protocols. Lord Jagannath, along with his elder brother and younger sister, is scheduled to stay at the Gundicha temple for a few days, before the return journey, called Bahuda Yatra, is set to take place on the ninth day from the day of the Rath Yatra.

An official said that the chariot pullers, who participated in the procession, were fully vaccinated. He also said that apart from police personnel, at least 1,000 officials were deployed to ensure the smooth conduct of the yatra.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik watched the complete procession on the television and also thanked the Shree Mandir administration, Puri district administration, police administration and various departments of the state government for working day and night to ensure a hassle-free Rath Yatra. He also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the people of Puri for making the occasion successful.

It is worth mentioning here that Rath Yatra is one of the biggest Hindu festivals and it's organized every year at the famous Jagannatha temple in Puri, Odisha. It is celebrated on Dwitiya Tithi during Shukla Paksha of Ashada month (June-July). Lord Jagannatha is considered as a form of Lord Vishnu. Jagannatha literally means Lord of the Universe. The Jagannatha temple in Puri is one of the four Hindu pilgrimage centres known as Char Dham. Lord Jagannatha is worshipped along with his brother Balabhadra and his sister Devi Subhadra.
