Govt ITI Cuttack develops Covid-19 sample collection walk-in kiosk

A team of ITI Cuttack has developed a walk-in kiosk for the safe and speedy collection of samples from suspected Covid-19 patients. Inspired by a South Korean Model, the walk-in kiosk is expected to help frontline healthcare professionals to avoid direct exposure to infected persons.

Cuttack(Odisha): In an attempt to ease the identification of the corona infected persons, the team of Government Industrial Training Insititute(ITI) Cuttack has developed a walk-in kiosk. Inspired by South Korea's innovative way of testing for COVID-19 symptoms, the walk-in kiosk will ensure the safe collection of samples.

A sample collection kiosk is a mobile cubicle cabin which comes with a pair of gloves attached to it in the front through which the doctor can take the samples of the infected patients. The structure is supported with four wheels at the base for mobility.

The swab collections can also be done without any contact with the patient and the gloves can be sanitised from outside. This will reduce the need for more PPE kits and will enable more tests in a short period.

These kiosks were made under the guidelines of the Director of Directorate of Technical Education and Training. However, collecting the required materials was a tough challenge for the entire team and the team expressed confidence that they are capable of making 20 such Centres if required materials are provided to them. Carpenters, electricians, fitters and painters were put to job to develop the kiosks and the task was completed in a week.

"The Walk-in Kiosk designed by ITI Cuttack is a great example of right ideas at this time. I am happy that we have taken inspiration to create this mobile cubical cabin internally to support on-ground testing in a much faster and efficient manner,", said Union Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Mahendra Nath Pandey.

As per the Health Organisation, Covid-19 spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes or speaks. Infection can also spread by touching a contaminated surface and then their eyes, mouth or nose.

The development is expected to help front-line healthcare professionals to avoid direct exposure to infected persons.

Earlier, in the first of its kind, Kerala had developed a kiosk, called walk-in sample kiosk(Wisk) for the mass collection of suspected Covid-19 patients.
