Despite govt claims, malnutrition still plagues Odisha

The Banspal Block of Keonjhar district in Odisha is one of those remote areas where the rural population majorly constitutes the tribal population. The area not only lacks basic facilities but is also afflicted by severe malnutrition.

The case of 11-month-old Tipu Munda is yet another addition to the increasing list, indicating the urgent need to address the issue of malnutrition.

Tipu's father Sukra Munda, is a labourer who has been taking care of his two sons on a scanty pay.

"I am a labourer working on a low wage. Ever since my wife's demise, I have been facing difficulties in providing them with nutritious food," he said.

Tipu was admitted to a government hospital after a child helpline stepped forward to help his father who could not afford to admit him to a hospital.

Soon the case was reported to Chief District Medical Officer Ashok Das who assured Munda's free treatment.

"We have properly equipped the Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre where Tipu Munda can be taken for proper care along with high-protein diet," said Das.

Cases like these go on to prove the ineffectiveness of government schemes, which are not generating the desired impact.
