Berhampur: The court of additional district and sessions judge (ADJ-III), Ganjam, awarded life imprisonment to the former Odisha legislator, Narayan Reddy, on Monday. The former MLA from Chhatrapur and CPI leader, Narayan Reddy, was awarded a life term in connection with the death of a reserve police inspector in 1998 during the police-public clash. Besides Reddy, the court also awarded life imprisonment to 12 other accused in the case.
Following his conviction in the murder case, Reddy said, "The verdict was influenced by the government. The general public and farmers do not get justice. I will move the higher court challenging the verdict." In 1998, a clash broke out during a meeting at Sindhi village in Odisha. The protesters were led by Reddy and his supporters. Bombs were also hurled during the protest. A reserve police inspector Binay Meher had been killed during the demonstration.
