Bhubaneswar:Congress candidate for the by-election in Odisha's Pipili assembly constituency, Ajit Mangaraj, died at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday, three days before the polling scheduled on April 17.
The bypoll in the constituency was necessitated due to the death of senior BJD MLA Pradeep Maharathy in October last year. Meanwhile, the Election Commission has said that the by-polls scheduled for April 17, has been postponed and the fresh dates will be notified later.
Mangaraj, 53, was hospitalised after falling ill during campaigning in Pipili last week. He had announced on Saturday that he tested positive for COVID-19.
"Mr Ajit Mangaraj was admitted to Apollo hospital on 7th April’ 21 with a diagnosis of severe Covid-19 pneumonia. The patient was under the treatment of a multidisciplinary team of doctors from specialities including Critical Care, cardiology and pulmonary medicine in Covid ICU where all necessary life-saving support including non-invasive ventilation was extended to save the life of the patient. However, after bravely battling the severe Covid infection for the past seven days, Mr Mangaraj succumbed to the disease at approximately 4.00 PM", read the press note released by the hospital.
Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and senior Congress leaders condoled his death.
While the campaigning for the election, which was scheduled to end on Thursday, came to a halt. The state's Chief Electoral Officer SK Lohani sought a report from the district election officer of Puri on the death of Mangaraj, an official said.

"The hon'ble Governor condoled the passing away of senior Congress leader and Pipili assembly bypoll candidate Ajit Mangraj and extended his condolences to his family members. Om Shanti," a Raj Bhavan statement said.
