Vidarbha Natural Production Co. distributes Waigaon turmeric seeds at no cost

To help farmers struggling with financial constraints amid coronavirus pandemic, Vidarbha Natural Production Company in Maharashtra has come up with an initiative of distributing Waigaon turmeric seeds to farmers on condition of returning it next year to increase the cultivation area of the rare variety. Waigaon turmeric's curcumin content is 6.50 per cent by weight and it has a high demand in the international market due to its medicinal properties.

Wardha (Maharashtra):To help farmers to battle economic crisis amid COVID-19 pandemic, Vidarbha Natural Production Company in Maharashtra has launched a new scheme based on the barter system. It has taken the initiative of distributing turmeric seeds among farmers on condition of returning it next year to increase the cultivation area for Waigaon turmeric.

The rare variety of turmeric is highly in demand due to its unique fragrance and quality as according to Spices Board of India, Waigaon’s turmeric curcumin content is 6.50 per cent by weight.

Waigaon (Haldya) village in Samudrapur Taluqa is famous for its traditional farming of turmeric over the years and its demand is on the rise after getting Geographical Indication tag in 2016 but the area under cultivation has not yet increased in all these years.

Problems due to coronavirus, low commodity prices and crop situation have pushed farmers into deep trouble. Hence, making efforts in this direction, Vidarbha Natural Production Company is giving 25 kg of turmeric seed to each farmer.

As per locals, the cultivation of Waigaon turmeric started during the era of land revenue and the farming was done on the lake water.

The turmeric is said to be rich in medicinal properties and is used in making Ayurvedic drug for Cancer. It is also having a huge demand in the international market.

Waigaon turmeric can be easily recognised by its purity, dark yellow colour, fragrance and smooth touch.

Vidarbha Natural Production Company is making efforts on no loss no profit basis. The partners in the company collected turmeric from their farms. 125 kg seeds were given to 128 farmers each which equal to 34 quintals.

Shobha Gaydhane, Haribhau Garghate, Vitthal Karwatkar, Pankaj Bhagat, Gajanan Garghate, Manoj Gaydhane, Chandrabhan Hiwse are some prominent figures who are putting their efforts in this movement to increase turmeric cultivation across the nation.
