SKM terms Maharashtra govt's attempt to amend farm laws as futile

SKM has termed the Maharashtra government's attempt to amend the Centre's three Agri laws as futile. The farmers' organisation also tagged the state government move as pointless.

New Delhi:Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) has termed the Maharashtra government's attempt to amend the Centre's new farm laws as futile. The statement was issued after 32 farmers organisations under SKM held a meeting on Thursday at the Singhu border protest site. Criticising the Maharashtra government's move, the organisation termed it pointless.

This comes after Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, earlier in the day, said that the state government will approve the three farm laws after amending them in the interest of the farmers. SKM said that Maharashtra farmers' organizations have already put up their demand before the Chief Minister and Deputy CM where they demanded cancellation of the three laws and to ensure MSP guarantee law.

SKM also stated that any amendment in the Maharashtra APMC Act 1963 should be done by the state government only after carrying out proper democratic procedures. The organisation appealed to the Maharashtra government to support the farmers' movement. Meanwhile, the implementation of the Centre's agriculture reform laws was stayed by the Supreme Court in January 2021 and agitating farmers are demanding to repeal these laws while protesting against them on Delhi borders for the past seven months.

Almost all non-NDA state governments have so far opposed the three farm laws brought by the NDA government following which they are untouched by vigorous farmers' protests. So far farmers' movement has been focused on the Central government and the BJP ruled states but if Maharashtra's Maha Vikas Aghadi government supports the amendment proposal, then the farmers' organizations will openly oppose it.

On the other hand, farmers have also welcomed the acquittal of Assam's activist and MLA Akhil Gogoi from all charges by a special NIA court. Gogoi is also a farmer leader from Krishi Mukti Sangram Samiti in Assam and he has also supported farmers' stir against the farm laws.
