Re-verify caste certificates, SC asks Maha govt

New Delhi:The Supreme Court directed the Maharashtra government on Tuesday to re-verify the community certificates granted to people belonging to Scheduled Tribes, between the period of 30th July 2011 to 31st August 2012.

The decision was passed in an appeal filed by district collector Satara challenging the order of the Bombay High court, which had turned down the accuracy of such certificates.

The Apex court had earlier issued directions to streamline the procedure for issuance of the social status certificates and had suggested the constitution of a Vigilance Committee and a Scrutiny Committee, to oversee the process.

The Supreme Court also emphasized on the importance of proper verification of such certificates to be issued and said that the exercise of issuance of the certificates should not be carried in a casual manner.

The court specified that till such re-verification was completed, the existing certificates issued for the interim period would hold good.
