Nagpur autos get QR code system for passenger safety

Auto-rickshaws in Nagpur will now have a QR code, which when scanned, will provide the passenger with details of the driver like name, photograph and vehicle registration number. Passengers also have the option of sharing the details with their friends or relatives during the journey.

Nagpur (Maharashtra): In a bid to ensure the safety of passengers, the Nagpur traffic police have launched a QR code system for auto-rickshaws plying in the city.

Through the system, passengers will be able to scan the QR (Quick Response) code and get information about the auto-rickshaw driver instantly.

DCP (Traffic) Vikram Sali said that the system was launched with the aim of ensuring the safety of passengers, especially women and senior citizens. With many incidents of crime against women being registered in the city in the past few months the initiative will help in curbing such incidents, he added.

Under the system, a QR code sticker is affixed behind the driver's seat inside autos. After boarding the auto, passengers can get details like the name of the driver, photograph, registration number of the vehicle by simply scanning the code through their smartphones.

If required, passengers can also share the driver's details with the relatives or friends. This can prove handy to those travelling in the night.

In the first phase, the system is being implemented in 2,000 autos across Nagpur, and the fixing of QR codes has already started.

The system will also be helpful for the police in tracing drivers against whom passengers file complaints. Further, passengers can also contact the driver in case they leave their belongings in the vehicle.
