Mumbai's Dabbawalas seek financial aid from govt

The business of the famous Dabbawalas is globally appreciated for its flawless management, but these Dabbawalas of Mumbai are facing a tough time due to the Covid-19 crisis.

Mumbai: The business of the famous Dabbawalas is globally appreciated for its flawless management, but these Dabbawalas of Mumbai are facing a tough time due to the Covid-19 crisis.

In the first and second waves of the corona, all sectors were hit and the Dabbawalas were no exception.

They deliver lunch boxes from home to office even during the Covid-19 times. Now, the Mumbai Dabbawalas Association has urged the government for financial assistance.

Subhash Talekar said that ‘Dabbawalas, who were once known as 'management gurus', are now in debt.’ He also requested that the government should offer Rs 5,000 per month to these Dabbawalas during this ongoing Covid-19 crisis.

There are about 5000 Dabbawalas in Mumbai. Due to the discontinuation of local travel and closure of offices, the Dabbawalas are facing an acute financial crisis.

Some of them have headed to the villages for farming, while others have started driving rickshaws in Mumbai. Dabbawala’s are making a living by doing whatever they can get their hands on. Their families are suffering too.
