IMD upgrades warning status for Mumbai and coastal Maharashtra; issues red alert

India Meteorological Department has upgraded warning status for Mumbai and coastal Maharashtra by issuing a red alert. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur over Mumbai city, Thane, Raigad and Ratnagiri districts during the next 18 hours.

Mumbai (Maharashtra):In the wake of the heavy downpour in Mumbai and coastal Maharashtra, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday upgraded the warning status from orange to red, a special bulletin on the city's rain said on Wednesday.

The city has been witnessing heavy rains since Tuesday night, resulting in water-logging in many areas.

A red alert has been issued for Mumbai, R K Jenamani, scientist with the National Weather Forecasting Centre, said.

The bulletin said that scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls are very likely to occur over Mumbai city, Thane, Raigad and Ratnagiri districts during the next 18 hours.

The bulletin added that due to the heavy rains, inundation of low-lying areas is expected. The rains could also lead to disruption in electricity and water supply, local traffic and road transport.

Until 8.30 a.m., Dadar had recorded 15.9 centimetres of rainfall; Parel 13.2 cms; Colaba 12.9 cms; Worli 11.7 cms; Santacruz 10.6 cms; Santacruz 6.3 cms; Borivali 10.1 cms, as per the bulletin.

From 8.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m., Santacruz received 6.3 centimetres of rainfall; Bandra 9.5 cms; Colaba 1.2 cms; Mahalakshmi 5.3 cms; Ram Mandir (western railway) 6.3 cms.

The authorities have issued advisory for people to avoid unnecessarily moving out along with following all necessary precautions and staying away from the shore.

The trend may continue on Thursday with reduced intensity, IMD said.

The IMD has forecast a high tide of 3.50-metre waves on Thursday morning.

According to BMC Disaster Cell, south Mumbai notched 12.16 cm rain while the suburbs recorded 9.66 cm rain, coming to a seasonal total of 51.97 per cent and 45.99 per cent, respectively, as per the IMD.

The BMC's rain-gauges measured 8.92 cm rain in the city, 4.84 cm in the eastern suburbs and 7.51 cm in the western suburbs, giving a seasonal total rainfall of 37.74 per cent till date.

Following rains, there was waterlogging in some areas like Wadala, Dadar and Matunga, while the Andheri subway was also flooded, resulting in minor traffic diversions.

The BMC Disaster Cell said that 12 big and small trees fell, few houses were damaged, besides 21 complaints of short-circuit, but there were no casualties.

IMD Mumbai's Deputy Director-General K S Hosalikar in a tweet on Wednesday said, "IMD GFS forecast for rains indicate heavy to very heavy with possibilities of isolated extremely heavy (more than 200mm) RF over Konkan, including Mumbai, Thane today."

"Tomorrow trend to continue with little reduced intensity. Satellite, radar indicating intense clouds overcoast PL TC," he added.

Hosalikar said that the observatories at Dahanu (in Palghar) and Alibaug (Raigad) recorded 128 mm and 122.6 mm rainfall, respectively, during the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the IMD has also issued an orange alert for Thane, Palghar and other coastal districts in Maharashtra, saying 'heavy to very heavy' rainfall is very likely at isolated places in the region on Wednesday.

Heavy rain lashes Mumbai

The Colaba weather bureau in South Mumbai recorded 121.6 mm rainfall, while the Santacruz weather station, representative of Mumbai's suburbs, reported 96.6 rainfall during the same period.

The Ratnagiri observatory recorded 101.3 mm rainfall during the period, while the Harnai weather station in the district reported 89 mm rain.

The Thane Belapur Industries Association bureau reported 35.2 mm rainfall and Kolhapur district in western Maharashtra received 16.8 mm rainfall, the IMD said.
