Thane (Maharashtra): At least six workers died and another injured here after a lift collapsed from a 40-storied building. The incident took place at Runwal Garden, beside Narayani School, Highland Park in Balkum on the Ghodbunder Road, an official of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) said.

According to the information received, the local police and fire brigade personnel, with seven fire tenders, rushed to the spot. It is understood that waterproofing work was going on in the newly constructed building.

A senior TMC official said that the injured was admitted to a private hospital. "The waterproofing work was going on on the roof of the building. The occurred when the labourers were coming down after completing the work when the lift rope broke," the official added.

Eyewitnesses alerted the Balakum Fire Brigade about the mishap. Former local councillor Sanjay Bhoir also reached the spot and helped in the rescue work. Sources in the TMC said that the rescue team pulled out the labourers trapped in the lift. Police are probing the incident.

Later, in a release, the TMC identified the deceased as Mahendra Choupal (32), Rupesh Kumar Das (21), Harun Shaikh (47), Mithilesh (35), and Karidas (38). The identity of one of the deceased is yet to be confirmed.

The injured has been identified as Sunil Kumar Das (21).
