Kolhapur (Maharashtra): Kolhapuris, the sturdy leather chappal that rose from its humble rural origins to occupy the high table of fashion globally, now also has a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
Continuing the legacy of the iconic Kolhapuri chappals, a man here has made footwear from cow dung.
It might sound unbelievable but it is true and footwears are now being sold in the market.
Kolhapur man manufactures footwear using cow dung Kiran Mali, a resident of Kolhapur, owns a company named-Total Dream Services where they make footwear from cow dung.
Mali has named the slipper as "Gomay Charan Paduka." He also claims that wearing the cow dung slippers can get rid of many diseases.
"The cow dung slipper is helpful in controlling one's blood pressure and also reduces mental stress. These slippers can also survive in water. However, the use of these in water should be avoided if possible," he said.
He also said that the price of the footwear ranges from Rs 500 to Rs 700 and available for people of all age groups.
Mali further added that there is a huge demand for these slippers and he intends to export these slippers abroad as well.
