HC grants parole to 1993 Mumbai blasts convict

A vacation Bench of Justices SS Shinde and Abhay Ahuja granted the plea of 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blast convict, Rubina Suleman Memon, who had sought release on parole to attend her daughter’s wedding on January 8.

Mumbai:The Bombay High Court on Thursday (Dec 31) granted parole to a life convict in the 1993 Mumbai blasts in order to enable her to attend her daughter's wedding on January 8, 2021.

A vacation Bench of Justices SS Shinde and Abhay Ahuja allowed convict Rubina Memon's plea keeping in view the human rights of the daughter. Memon had initially applied to the Yerawada Central Prison for parole but no decision was taken on the same prompting her to approach the High Court.

When the plea was taken up for hearing on December 29, 2020, the Court was informed by the police that parole has been granted for two days subject to payment of Police Bandobast charges prior to the release.

The Court recorded the same and posted the case for further hearing on December 31, 2020.

On December 31, advocate Farhana Shah, representing Memon, requested that Memon be granted parole for at least 6 days to attend the marriage related functions of her daughter.

She informed the Court that Memon has served 13 years of imprisonment and has not been released on parole even once.

Notably, Rubina, along with three other family members, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act Court in Mumbai in 2006.
