Pune: Fossil fuels are depleting faster and they are harmful to the environment. The world community has to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels to curb global warming.

Addressing it, Pune Municipal Corporation has come up with an alternative wherein fuel is produced from plastic waste.

The PMC has likewise constructed many fuel plants and some have started functioning as well.

The PMC is working alongside other organisations to not only produce fuel from the plastic plants but also use the remaining residue (tar) in road construction and other purposes.

Two plants are located in Jethuri as well as Narayanpet in Pune.

Through this project, plastic waste collected from various municipal wards can be disposed of.

The fuel produced from a plastic plant can be used in Kerosene stoves, generators and boilers. Around 10 kgs pf plastic is required to produce six litres of fuel.

A few benefits of a plastic plant are that it can be constructed in a small area, while the residues can be used in road construction.

Also, at the moment 'plastic fuel plants' could be the best solution to deal with the ever-increasing plastic threat.
