First arrest in Payal Tadvi case, police detain Bhakti Mehare

The Mumbai Police today arrested Bhakti Mehare, one of the three female doctors from the BYL Nair Hospital accused of driving PG student Dr Payal Tadvi to suicide. The other two accused are still at large.

Mumbai: In the first arrest in the Payal Tadvi case, Mumbai police on Tuesday detained Dr Bhakti Meher, one of three senior doctors accused of driving the second year PG student to suicide.

Two of the accused doctors, Dr Hema Ahuja and Dr Ankita Khandelwal are still at large and have been untraceable since May 22.

Tadvi was found hanging in the hospital premises on May 22. Parents of 26-year-old have alleged that she committed suicide after casteist slurs by her senior colleagues.

Abeda, the mother of Payal, said, "Whenever she used to speak to me on phone, she would say that these three (senior doctors) people torture me as I belong to a tribal community, use casteist slurs. We want justice for her."

The three doctors have been booked under the Atrocities Act, the Anti-Ragging Act and the IT Act and Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the IPC.
