Hyderabad: As the nation mourns over the death of residents of Kesarbhai building at Dongri area in Mumbai, which collapsed on July 16, we look at repeated incidents of building collapses in Maharashtra.
The major collapses reported in India's financial capital were caused by heavy monsoon rains, lack of proper disaster management policy or not pushing redevelopment of unsafe suburb buildings.
In the last 10 years, some of the major building collapse incidents which lead to killing dozens of residents are mentioned below:
July 8, 2019: Shivaji Nagar building collapse
At least five people were injured after a building collapsed in Shivaji Nagar. Over 20 people were sleeping inside the building when the incident took place. The cause of the incident is yet to be ascertained.
December 23, 2018: Goregaon building collapse
At least three workers were killed and eight others injured after a two-storey under-construction structure collapsed in Goregaon. Later, the police arrested a contractor and supervisor for negligence.
July 16, 2018: Ulhasnagar building collapse
A 40-year-old woman died and two of her family members suffered minor injuries after a slab fell into her second-floor flat at Murliwala building in Ulhasnagar. The building was constructed in 1995.
July 25, 2018: Bhiwandi building collapse
A 25-year-old woman died and five others, including a nine-year-old girl, suffered injuries after a portion of a ground plus-three-storey illegal building in Khoni village near Bhiwandi crashed on a public toilet and an adjoining chawl.
June 25, 2018: Charni road-building collapse
A 28-year-old man was killed in a blaze that broke out in Kothari House, a 3-storey building, near Central Plaza cinema in Charni Road.
April 2, 2018: Families displaced in Bandra following the threat of building collapse
The state government had asked more than 1,600 families of its staff, residing in staff quarters at Government Colony in Bandra East to vacate their dilapidated houses. The health of 60-year-old colony deteriorated and families were living under roofs awaiting collapse.
August 6, 2016: Collapsing homes during monsoon
Eight people were crushed under their own homes when heavy rains lashed the city of Mumbai.
September 27, 2013: Mazagaon building collapse
At least 61 people died and 32 others were injured after a five-storey building collapsed in the Mazagaon.
September 21, 2013: Thane building collapse
Five children killed and seven others were injured after a 20-year-old building collapsed in Thane district. The incident happened when the residents were asleep.
Despite, repeated incidents of building collapse government have not been pro-active in taking necessary steps and the city's infrastructure remains weak and awaits its downfall.
