Eight sentenced till 'rising of court' for defying prohibitory orders

Eight persons in Maharashtra's Thane were sentenced till the "rising of the court" and were imposed a fine of Rs 600 on them for taking out a rally by defying the prohibitory orders after India had defeated Pakistan in a cricket tie in 2016.

Thane ( Maharashtra): A magistrate's court here in Maharashtra sentenced eight persons till the "rising of the court" and imposed a fine of Rs 600 on them for taking out a rally by defying the prohibitory orders after India had defeated Pakistan in a cricket tie in 2016.

The court of First Class Judicial Magistrate (FCJM) R H Jha convicted the eight men, all residents of Thane, under provisions of the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951.

The verdict was pronounced on January 24. The court also imposed a collective fine of Rs 600 on all the convicts.

Despite the prohibitory orders issued by the Thane police commissioner, the eight men took out a rally hailing India's victory over Pakistan in the cricket match on the night of March 19, 2016.

They had also shouted slogans like "Bharat Mata ki Jai", according to the prosecution.
