8-month-old girl tests HIV positive; kin complain to Health Minister alleging blood bank's negligence

After an eight-month-old girl tested HIV positive, relatives lodged complaint with Health Minister Rajesh Tope alleging blood bank's negligence in donating her blood with infection.

Akola:After an eight-month-old girl tested HIV positive, relatives lodged complaint with Health Minister Rajesh Tope alleging blood bank's negligence in donating her blood with infection. The complainant demanded investigation of the matter and stringent action against culprits. The incident was reported in Hirpur in Murtijapur taluk.

After three days of birth, the baby's health deteriorated and medical tests found out that she had low blood cells. The paediatrician at Murtijapur advised that the girl should be given blood for cells production. After receiving blood from BP Thackeray Blood Bank in Akola, the girl started having fever.

Later, after testing at Amravati, it was found out that she was HIV positive. However, the test results of the child's parents were negative. Sources said interrogation of blood bank officials revealed that the blood donor was HIV positive.
