Dharavi becoming Covid-19 free, no new Covid-19 cases since March

A big challenge was before the Mumbai administration to curb the spread of Covid-19 in the area with densely populated slums. On the other hand, Dharavi was being negatively seen as the hotspot of Coronavirus. The same Dharavi has defeated Coronavirus now. Today, not a single Covid-19 positive patient was found in Dharavi.

Mumbai: The slum-dominated Dharavi area of Mumbai did not report a single coronavirus infection in the last 24 hours.

For the first time since April 1 when the first coronavirus patient was detected in the area, which is among the densest urban settlements in the world, no new case has been detected.

Fear was on peak in April-May for locals

In April, the first case was found in Dharavi and the number started to increase with speed. Within some days, Dharavi was being recognized as the largest hotspot in Mumbai.

The months of April and May were the most frightening months for locals. There used to be 60 to 70 new cases found and concern began to grow. BMC-private doctors launched a mission to curb Corona cases. When Coronavirus created havoc in Dharavi, it was not affordable for the administration to allow Corona cases to grow in Dharavi at any cost.

Finally, BMC and private doctors literally took to the streets to check Covid-19. BMC and private doctors started immediately to screen the locals and quarantined suspected patients and people who had come in contact with them. They provided timely treatment to them.

Lockdown was imposed in Dharavi for more than two months and implemented other measures.

Successful efforts

The success for relentless efforts of BMC and private doctors began to come in June-July and the number started to decline. It came down to one digit and today there was not a single

Corona positive case found. This is considered as a very positive thing and if this trend continues, Dharavi will become Coronavirus free.

Meanwhile, as Dharavi showed how to control Covid-19, its cognizance was taken on the international level and World Health Organization praised Dharavi residents and BMC for their efforts. International media also has taken the note of controlling Coronavirus in Dharavi.
