Debt-ridden farmer commits suicide in Maharashtra

A 35-year-old farmer, on Monday commited suicide as he could not allegedly repay bank loan in Beed district,Maharashtra. He was also under depression for poor crop production from his farms.

Mumbai: Inability to repay bank loan and poor output from agriculture fields allegedly drove a 35-year-old farmer to commit suicide Monday in Beed district of Maharashtra, police said.

The farmer, Mahadev Rambhau Bhosle, was found hanging from a mango tree through a rope in the early hours in village Khardewadi in the district, around 375km from here in the arid Marathwada region, an official said.

Bhosle was spotted hanging by some onlookers, who alerted his family members, he said.

Bhosle was upset as he was not able to replay loan which his father had taken from Yelambghat branch of Bank of Maharashtra, he said.

He was also under depression for poor crop production from his farms, the official said.

Bhosle left his residence at around 4 am and went tothe farm of another villager Vyankat Kalkute where he was found hanging, he said.

His family members immediately took him to a hospital, where he was declared dead before arrival, he said.

An accidental death case was registered at the Neknur police station and a probe underway, the official added.
