COVID-19: Maharashtra running out of space for cremation

As many as 760 people died due to coronavirus in March. Already, 802 patients have died due to COVID-19 in the first two weeks of April. According to the health bulletin, the deadly virus is claiming at least 35 lives every day.

Nagpur (Maharashtra): With a surge in COVID cases in Maharashtra, the state, and especially Nagpur, is likely to find itself in a spot as it is running out of space to cremate the deceased.

As many as 760 people died due to coronavirus in March. Already, 802 patients have died due to COVID-19 in the first two weeks of April. According to the health bulletin, the deadly virus is claiming at least 35 lives every day.

At this rate, the state is staring at a situation where it may not be able to afford some space to cremate the deceased.

A sense of fear has prevailed among the people as pyres are seen burning round the clock at major cremation sites.

Shailendra Kohle, in charge of a crematorium, said, "For the last eight days, we had to cremated even before the earlier pyre fire cooled down."

Maharashtra reported 28,307 new COVID-19 cases, 31,624 discharges and 281 deaths on Wednesday. Currently, there are 5,94,585 active cases in the state, according to the Union Health Ministry.
