CM Uddhav Thackeray orders fast track trial in Mumbai rape case

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has also taken up the matter with the Commissioner of Police. The incident is reprehensible, said the Chief Minister and assured that the culprit will be severely punished. The Chief Minister also said that the case would be tried on a fast track and the victim would get justice.

Mumbai:The victim in the brutal rape case in Sakinaka died at a hospital here on Saturday. This incident was followed by a wave of outrage across the state. Expressing grief over the death of the victim, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has ordered to take the case to a fast track court. Opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis also demanded a death sentence for the accused. Meanwhile, the accused in the case has been remanded to police custody till September 21.

The ghastly incident

The victim was brutally raped on Khairani Road in Sakinaka, Mumbai around 3 am on 10th Sep. The accused allegedly tortured the woman by inserting a rod into her genitals. The police control had received a complaint about the beating of a woman at Khairani Road within the limits of Sakinaka police station around 3 am.

After Sakinaka police reached the spot, they rushed the injured woman to Rajawadi Hospital where doctors declared her condition as critical. The woman died on Saturday during treatment. Police have arrested one, Mohan Chauhan, in the case. He has been charged under sections 307, 376, 323 and 504 of the Indian Penal Code and has been remanded to police custody till September 21.

Information provided by Police

"On September 10, at around 3.20 am, a watchman from a factory in Sakinaka called the control room to report that a woman is being beaten. Upon learning about the incident, the control room informed the police within the limits of the police station concerned. The police officers soon reached the crime scene. They found a woman in an open tempo lying in a pool of blood in a very critical condition. Acting quickly, the police took the tempo straight to Rajawadi Hospital and admitted her," Police Commissioner Hemant Nagarale informed media.

"The doctors then started treatment on the woman immediately," he said.

One accused in the case: Nagrale

The Police Commissioner informed that a case has been registered in this regard on the complaint of the watchman.

The accused arrested in the case is Mohan Chauhan. He was remanded to police custody until Sept. 21, Nagarale said.

A special team led by ACP Jyotsna Rasam has been formed in this regard. As the victim died during treatment, section 302 has now been implemented in this case, informed Nagarale.

It was initially speculated that more than one accused was involved in the case. However, only one accused has been found in the investigation so far. He said police would complete the investigation as soon as possible and file a charge sheet. He has also requested that the media not release videos and photos that could affect the investigation.

CM ordered fast track trial

Accused will be severely punished: Valse Patil

Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil said that the accused will be severely punished.

"The police department has been notified as to who else is involved in the case. So find it. We are getting all the information about this case from time to time," said Valse Patil.

Execute the accused: Fadnavis

Opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis has demanded that the accused should be hanged.

"Mumbai is known as a safe city. Night and day in Mumbai, women and girls feel safe." However, Fadnavis said that this tradition is being threatened due to increasing incidents of rape.

"The case should be tried in a fast track court," he demanded. He also said that the perpetrators of this crime should be sentenced to death.

Death due to excessive bleeding: Pednekar

Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar has said that the victim died due to excessive bleeding.

On the 9th September, the woman was brought to Rajawadi Hospital. She was in critical condition at the time due to massive bleeding. The doctor tried to save the woman. The surgery lasted for two and a half to three hours. However, the doctor could not save the woman, said Pednekar.

The victim and the accused had known each other for 10 to 12 years. An argument was going on between them. The accused used to beat the woman concerned and also thrashed her on the day of the incident. The woman was admitted to the hospital after locals noticed it. The police have arrested the accused, said Pednekar.

State govt will take responsibility for victim's daughters

Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde visited the victim's family on Saturday. Shinde said the state government would take responsibility for both of the victims' daughters.

BJP MLA Nitesh Rane has criticized the state government over the incident and demanded a two-day special session of the Legislative Assembly on the issue of women's security. BJP state president Chandrakant Patil also criticized the state government. Patil said that there was no fear of law in the state. Patil demanded strict action against the culprits in the case.
