Maharashtra boat mishap: 3 drowned while search continues for missing 8

According to preliminary information, 11 people who were on the boat belonged to the same family and a rescue operation is underway to find out the missing persons; two survive the tragedy

Amravati: Eleven members of the same family were feared drowned after a boat carrying 13 people sank on Tuesday morning in the Wardha river, which flows through the village of Jhunj in Warud taluka on the border of Amravati and Wardha districts. Two people survived the incident while three bodies have been recovered.

Search operation by the police and rescue squads is going on for eight others who went missing. The thirteen people had boarded a boat that had a seating capacity of four.

According to preliminary information, 11 people who were on the boat belonged to the same family and a rescue operation is underway to find out the missing persons," said Hari Balaji, Superintendent of Police, Amravati (Rural).

However, authorities had to halt the search operation for the rest of the missing persons due to darkness and rain. The search will now resume on Wednesday morning.

The MLA of the Morshi constituency Devendra Bhuyar, District Collector of Amravati Pawanit Kaur and Superintendent of Police Dr Hari Balaji also reached the spot to take stock of the search operation.
