14 killed as heavy rains trigger floods in Maharashtra's Solapur

Torrential rains over the past few days triggered severe flooding across Maharashtra's Solapur district, claiming as many as 14 lives and affecting over 500 villages.

Solapur (Maharashtra): At least 14 people were killed and 570 villages affected as heavy rains led to severe flooding in several areas across Maharashtra's Solapur district, officials said on Thursday.

According to reports, six persons died in wall collapse in the temple town of Pandharpur on October 14, while remaining deaths too occurred in rain-and flood-related incidents.

State Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Thursday ordered a probe into the Pandharpur incident and instructed that an offence of culpable homicide be filed against those responsible for it.

In the last couple of days, heavy rains lashed several parts of the state.

The worst-hit were Solapur, Kolhapur, Sangli, Pune, and Satara in western Maharashtra and Latur, Osmanabad and Beed in Marathwada.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray asked the state administration, Army, Navy and Air Force to be on high alert.

In a statement, the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said that NDRF teams have been stationed in Osmanabad, Solapur, Pandharpur and Baramati.
