Girls thrashed for chatting with cousins over phone

Cases have been registered against seven people after two tribal girls were beaten up in Madhya Pradesh for chatting with their cousins over the phone.

Dhar (Madhya Pradesh): Two tribal girls were beaten up in Madhya Pradesh for chatting with their cousins over the phone. According to the police, seven people were apprehended in connection with the incident which had taken place on June 22 in Pipalva village, around 70 km from Dhar district headquarters.

"On June 25, we came across a video in which two women were seen being beaten up. While verifying the clip, we came to know that their family members were involved in this," Tanda police station in-charge Vijay Vaskale said.

In the video, it can be clearly seen that several youths including women had rained blows on the girls. Despite the girls pleading for mercy, they were kicked and beaten brutally, a police official said, adding that following the incident, the women were so terrified that they did not even lodge a complaint with the police. However, it was after the police had taken cognizance of the issue that the women were brought to the Tanda Police Station and a case was registered against seven people in connection with the incident, he added.

In the investigation, police also found that the family members were furious with the women for having spoken on phone to the sons of their maternal uncle. The victims also told the police that their paternal cousins and other family members had stopped them near a school in the village and subsequently assaulted them with sticks.

Earlier, in a similar incident, a married woman was tied to a tree and thrashed with sticks by her kin in Alirajpur district for having left her husband's home to stay with her uncle. A video of the incident too had gone viral on social media. Later. following a complaint by the victim, police registered a case against the father and three brothers.

Amid several cases of crimes against women being reported in the state, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had made it clear that the strictest punishment will be given to the accused in such cases.
