Vidisha: During the festival of devotion to Shakti in the city, a unique monolithic flame burns in the Durga temple in Vidisha district during Navratri. In this Durga temple, people reach here to burn the eternal flames. These devotees include Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan and many other political personalities, NRIs and foreign dignitaries. The history of the Durga temple at Durga Nagar in Vidisha is very old. For many decades, the Durga temple has been the center of the faith for the devotees. About 815 Akhand Jyoti or lamps are always burning here, they are lit for the wishes of the devotees. 125 lamps are burnt with ghee i.e. the clarified butter, while 685 burn with oil. They consume at least 12 quintals of ghee and oil.
Chief Minister Shivraj also a bhakt
The temple's Mahant Rameshwar Chaturvedi says that Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan has great faith in this temple. Shivraj Singh Chauhan himself comes here and lights his lamp. The first among the 815 lamps is that of Shivraj Singh Chauhan. Not only this, there lamps that have been lighted by people of many countries including America, Iraq. Many foreign devotees come here to pay obeisance.
