Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh): A man's misadventure to please his wife by presenting her a red saree landed him in jail. Although the crime sounds petty, Ujjain police booked him under the National Security Act (NSA), a law that allows enforcement agencies to hold a detainee in prison for up to 12 months without trial.

The culprit, who police identified as Vicky, stole the saree from a textile showroom located just a few hundred metres away from the police station in Madhavnagar on Thursday. Vicky, according to the police, confessed that he "liked the colour of the saree" and thought he would give it to his wife as a gift. He also told police that he stole it because he did not have money to make a purchase. While the robbery was captured by a CCTV camera at the establishment, police nabbed the man in just 16 hours.

Meanwhile, the police slapped him with NSA on the man and substantiated that there are 16 cases registered against him at different police stations in the state.

"A saree is not the reason. The accused has carried out the incident of robbery in the middle market and has already committed such robbery," said Ravidra Verma, Assistant Superintendent of police.
