Bhopal:Mahatma Gandhi's mortal remains were allegedly stolen on his 150th birth anniversary on Wednesday by unidentified men from a museum in Madhya Pradesh's Rewa district.

In addition to stealing Gandhiji's ashes from the urn, they wrote 'anti-national' in green paint on his poster in 'Bapu Bhawan'.

An FIR has been registered under sections 153 b, 506 and 507 of the IPC.

Reportedly, when some people visited Laxman Bagh trust to pay tributes to Gandhi on Wednesday, they found out that the urn in which Gandhiji's ashes were stored was missing and the word 'Rashtra Drohi' was scribbled on his poster.

The act which took place despite the presence of SAF battalion, which guards the Bapu Bhawan, raises questions over the prevailing security measures.

Speaking to media, District Congress chief Gurmeet Singh, said, "Some people are inclined in promoting Godse's ideologies. This unlawful act must have been done by Nathuram Godse followers or some miscreants. I urged police to look into matter seriously and grab the accused otherwise Congress will raise its voice against it."

Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu extremist Nathuram Godse in 1948.

After his death, his mortal remains were not totally scattered in a river. Some of them were held back and were sent across the countries to various memorials.

Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were brought to Rewa's Laxmanbagh in 1970. Several people visit this place on a regular basis.
