Karuna Chauhan, wife of late Navy officer set to join Indian Army

Originally an associate professor at Dayalbagh University in Agra, Karuna married Lt. Dharmendra Singh Chauhan on 10 March 2019. Serving on the INS Vikramaditya, Dharmendra lost his life when the vessel caught fire just before reaching the Karwar port of Karnataka. With the support of her family and friends, Karuna is now geared up to join the Indian Army.

Ratlam: Karuna Chauhan, wife of late Navy officer Lieutenant Dharmendra Singh Chauhan is going to join the Army to serve the nation as once her husband did.

Originally an associate professor at Dayalbagh University in Agra, Karuna married Lt. Dharmendra Singh Chauhan on 10 March 2019. Immediately after their wedding, Dharmendra had to join on duty.

Serving on the INS Vikramaditya, Dharmendra lost his life when the vessel caught fire just before reaching the Karwar port of Karnataka.

Unfortunately, within 40 days of being married, Karuna became a widow.

Although, Karuna says her world came crashing down by the news of her husband's death, it made her proud to know that Dharmendra lost his life, whole serving the nation.

Karuna was at her in-laws’ house in Ratlam when the unfortunate news came.

Like every girl, she had her own dreams about marriage and career. She found Dharmendra to be the perfect life partner, but everything fell apart so quickly and suddenly.

Karuna said she felt lost for some time but the words of her mother-in-law Tina Kunwar Chauhan and mother Krishna Singh rekindled her spirit.

Head of the District Sainik Welfare Organization, Ratlam, Group Captain Irfan Khan was the first person to inspire her to join the army. Inspired by him, she went to a close family friend in Indore, Colonel Nikhil Dewan, under whose guidance she started preparing for the SSB interview.

Karuna said under the provision of 'Veer Nari' the widows of martyrs in the armed forces are not required to appear for the written examination and following the application, she was called for a direct interview.

She had applied for the Indian Army in December 2019 but was unsuccessful. She did not lose hope and made a second attempt. She got through her interview this time.

Karuna will join the Chennai OTA for 11 months of military training on 7 January 2021. Tina Kunwar Chauhan is extremely proud of her daughter-in-law and was delighted to hear that her daughter-in-law would join the Army too. She says that after her son, her daughter-in-law will be servicing the country.

She is proud and happy that her two children are now officers in the Indian Army.
