Idukki (Kerala): Edamalakkudy panchayat in the Idukki district of Kerala sets an example in the COVID fight by keeping it away, literally.
Despite the severe transmission of COVID in the second wave, not even one person has been confirmed to have contracted the disease in this Kerala panchayath. Edamalakkudy, which is the only tribal panchayat in the State with a population of more than 2000 people.

For the past one and a half years, the people in Edamalakkudy, have been strictly keeping COVID away from their panchayath. They ensured this by following strict quarantine methods.
Not a single person tested Covid positive in Edamalakkudy panchayat Currently, no one is allowed to enter the Edamalakkudy tribal panchayat without getting prior permission from the State Forests Department. Even government officials who intend to enter the village are allowed only after presenting a valid COVID negative certificate.

Usually, the residents here hire a jeep to go to the town once a week and buy all that they need, except ration supplies.
However, the Nattukkoottam (a group of residents) decided to stop that practice too during COVID times. Instead, one person goes out and buys all that is needed. The person who goes out to buy then observes a strict quarantine for 2 weeks, says sub-collector Prem Krishnan.
