Four students died in a stampede during the Tech Fest at Kochi University of Science and Technology. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan held an emergency meeting at a government guest house in Kozhikode in the wake of the tragedy and condoled the death of students.

Kochi (Kerala): Four people died in a stampede during the Tech Fest at Kochi University of Science and Technology on Saturday and over 50 others were injured, police said.

The information received from the spot is that most of the people got injured due to the stampede. The mishap took place when famous singer Nikita Gandhi was performing as part of the Tech Fest.

Saturday was the closing day of Tech Fest. There were many students in the auditorium where the program was held. It rained while the students and others were enjoying the program by dancing and celebrating. With this, those who were outside the auditorium rushed inside. The program was held in the auditorium of the university.

The injured were taken to the nearby Kalamasery Medical College Hospital, but four people were declared dead. Many people came to the campus for the singing performance of Bollywood singer Nikita Gandhi. The identity of the deceased was yet to be ascertained.

Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan held an emergency meeting at a government guest house in Kozhikode in the wake of the tragedy and condoled the death of students.

Vijayan, who chaired the meeting, later announced as cancelled all cultural and art events planned in connection with the ongoing Nava Kerala Sadas programme in the northern district on Sunday.

He also deputed ministers P Rajeev and R Bindhu to rush to the campus in Kalamassery to coordinate various measures. In a statement, the Chief Minister also directed to ensure treatment to all injured and said that Kerala Health Minister Veena George would coordinate steps in this regard.
