Kozhikode rape accused attempts suicide in police custody

A rape accused, while in police custody, attempted to suicide by jumping off the first floor level of Balussery Police Station of Kozhikode in Kerala on Saturday. He was arrested for allegedly raping a 6-year-old girl, on Wednesday night.

Kozhikode: The man, accused of raping a 6-year-old girl and arrested by the police on Friday night, attempted to suicide while in police custody here on Saturday.

The accused has allegedly sexually assaulted the 6-year-old daughter of a migrant labourer family at her shack in Unnikulam, near Balussery in Kozhikode district of Kerala on Wednesday.

The man named Ratheesh, aged 32, from Nellipparambil at Unnikulam in Kozhikode district, attempted to suicide by jumping off the first floor level of Balussery Police Station. Following this, Ratheesh was taken to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital and the doctors have said that his condition is not critical.

Ratheesh was taken into custody and the Balussery Police had recorded his arrest around 12 midnight on Friday.

Ratheesh was arrested for allegedly raping the 6-year-old girl. The incident happened when the child’s parents, who are workers in a granite quarry, were not at home, on Wednesday night.

The child had sustained severe injuries and is reportedly out of danger now.
