Kerala: Man gets 50 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping minor

A man from Kunnakulam in Kerala's Thrissur district was on Wednesday sentenced to 50 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor.

Thrissur: A man from the Porkulam area of Kunnamkulam in Kerala's Thrissur district was on Wednesday sentenced to 50 years of rigorous imprisonment by a fast-track court. The accused, identified as Sayooj (23), was accused in February 2018 of raping a minor girl.

Apart from being accused of forcefully entering the victim's house and raping her, he was also learned to have threatened her against revealing the ordeal to anyone. The case, as per information, came to the fore after the minor subsequently attempted suicide, following which her parents lodged a police complaint.

Sayooj was arrested by the-then Kunnamkulam Police Station Sub-Inspector KG Suresh after the victim's statement was recorded by the child welfare committee.

Kunnamkulam Fast Track Special POCSO Court Judge Reena M Das pronounced the verdict. "The sentence in the case should be exemplary to Control Such incidents", the judge observed. During the course of the trial, Adv K.S. Binoy and Adv: Amrita appeared for the prosecution. 19 witnesses were examined, 20 documents, exhibits etc. were produced and scientific evidence was presented.
