Ernakulam: A homemaker woman hailing from Malappuram district of Kerala decided to sell her kidney to settle her debts and to look after her sick children. Shanthi wrote a board which read ‘Organs for sale’ and started living on the street, along with her 5 children, in Ernakulam district of Kerala, here in the past couple of days.

Shanthi has been living in Varapuzha, at Ernakulam, for the past 9 years in a rented house. As she could not pay the rent any further, she had to vacate the house. She started living in a shed covered with tarpaulin sheets along the Kochi Container Road in Ernakulam in the past couple of days. All her five children have different health problems. Three of them have undergone surgeries in the recent past.

"As the expenses for their follow up treatments could not be met and the rent could not be paid, I decided to sell my organs to raise money," said Shanthi. Shanthi had to sell her house, earlier, for the medical treatment. Despite all that, she has a debt of more than Rs 20 lakhs.

On Sunday night, the police had attempted to send Shanthi and her children from the roadside tent, however, she did not budge. On Monday, the Police reached again and convinced Shanthi and took the family to Mulavukadu police station. The police then informed the district administration about the woman’s plight. Later, officials, including those from the Revenue department and the Child Welfare Committee, reached and discussed with Shanthi.

Government reaches out

Knowing about the plight of the woman through the officials, the State Government reached out to Shanthi and assured her that there is no need to sell her organs.

Kerala Health Minister K K Shailaja talked to Shanthi over the phone and told her that the Government will take care of her sick children’s medical treatment. The Rotary club of Ernakulam agreed to pay for her rent.

Many had reached out to help the family after the news on the plight of this woman and her children came out. Shanthi’s problems have been solved as the Government and a voluntary organisation have offered to help her with the medical treatment for her children and support with rent respectively.
