Govt to protect children of self-immolation couple

The government of Kerala has assured protection and care of the children of a couple in Neyyattinkara who accidentally immolating themselves during an eviction operation in a land dispute.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Government intervenes and assures to protect the children of the couple who died on Monday, after accidentally immolating themselves while threatening the officers to prevent eviction procedures on their disputed land, on last Tuesday.

The State Government is to build a house for the children of Rajan and Ambili, who succumbed to their burns, at the Medical College Hospital, here, on Monday.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has given directions to the administration officers to take immediate action in the matter. Meanwhile, State Police Chief DGP Loknath Behra has directed the Rural Superindent of Police (SP) to inquire whether there were any blips from the part of the Police in the unfortunate death of the couple.

Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has registered a case in the incident. Three of the Commission members have been told to visit the place where the couple’s children live and to provide all help and support required, said K V Manoj Kumar, chairman of the Child Rights Commission.

Rajan (47) and Ambili (40) had sustained severe burns after accidentally setting themselves ablaze amid an eviction procedure in a disputed land, as ordered by the Court in the Police presence. Rajan had been having a land dispute with Vasanth, his neighbour, in Neyyattinkara Court, Thiruvananthapuram. Meanwhile, the Court had ordered to clear a shed that Rajan had built in the contentious land while the case is still not settled.

Rajan had poured petrol over himself and tried to set himself ablaze in an attempt to scare the officers and the Policemen who had reached to execute a Court order and clear the shed Rajan had erected in a disputed property. He was trying to threaten the recovery officers saying that he will set himself ablaze.

However, according to Rajan’s statement, when SI Anil Kumar tried to snatch the lighter from him to prevent him from the extreme step, he accidentally caught fire. Rajan had held Ambili close to him due to which both of them sustained severe burns. The Police SI had also sustained minor burns in the incident.

Rajan and Ambili, who were being treated at the Medical College Hosptial, succumbed to their burns on Monday at a difference of a few hours between them.
