Kochi Water Metro inaugurated in Kerala

Kochi Water Metro services were inaugurated by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday. The construction of the Water Metro is being carried out by Kochi Metro Rail Limited.

Ernakulam: The first routes and terminals of the Kochi Water Metro were inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, on Monday. Kochi Water Metro is a green transport system accessible to all, Pinarayi said.

The CM said that the Water Metro would lead to a boom in the tourism sector and create many jobs. The CM thanked the Central Government, the German Government and Kreditanstault fur Weideraufbou (KFW) for their assistance in making the project a reality. Water Metro also has the distinction of being a differently-abled friendly transportation system.

The route from Vyttila to Kakkanad Infopark of Water Metro will be made into use in the first phase. The construction of the Water Metro is being carried out by Kochi Metro Rail Limited. Similar to metro stations, Water Metro builds world-class terminals. The Water Metro service will cover 15 routes covering a distance of 78.6 km. The modern boats required for the Water Metro are manufactured at the Kochi Shipyard. Construction of four boats has already been completed. Larger boats with a capacity of one hundred passengers and boats with a capacity of 50 passengers are being built. There will be 38 stations on 15 different routes. The project cost is Rs 740 crore.

Apart from the inauguration of the Water Metro, the inauguration of the completed Panamkutty New Bridge and Canal Renovation Project at Pettah was also held at the function.
