Kozhikode: Kappad beach in Kozhikode district of Kerala has been certified a ‘Blue flag’ beach, on the International Coastal Clean-Up Day, this year on September 19.
Kapad Beach in Kozhikode gets blue flag certification The historical Kappad beach will now be known as one of the cleanest beaches in India.
Blue flag certification has been issued by the international organisation named Foundation of Environmental Education based in Denmark, as part of the Tourism development. Kappad is one of the 8 beaches to get the Blue Flag certification in India.
This year’s International Coastal Clean up day has thus brought recognition for the State’s tourism department.

The criteria for being shortlisted for Blue Flag certification by the Denmark foundation includes being environment-friendly, secure, specially-abled friendly while also upholding the messages of environmental awareness. By attaining the Blue Flag certification, Kappad will gain a prominent place in the World tourism map for travellers from across the globe.
The development works at Kappad are carried out by a Delhi based infrastructure company named, A to Z Infrastructure Private Limited. Rs 8 Crore aid received from the World bank is being utilised for the beach renovation.
Secretary to the Department of Forests and Environment, R P Gupta, inaugurated the programme hoisting a flag with the writing ‘I am saving my beach’, which is the first phase of the project. The flag hoisting at Kappad was done by MLA K Dasa, on Saturday.
Complying with the COVID 19 guidelines, District COllector V Sambasiva Rao, Sub Collector G Priyanka, Panchayath president Asokan Kottu participated in the programme at Kappad here on Saturday.
