Kannur:The Center for Distance Education (School of Distance Education) of Kannur University has opened a centre for higher education for inmates in the Central Prison.
University officials informed that the study centre would offer undergraduate courses in Malayalam, history and commerce.
This is the first time a Kerala-based university has started a study centre in jail.
Kannur University starts study centre at Central Prison At present, three inmates in the jail enrolled their names for the university’s distance education courses.
The SDE started its study centre in the jail following the jail authorities’ intimation that nearly 25 inmates were willing to join the university’s distance education courses, they said.
Teachers would conduct classes in jail. It is also considering whether the exam centre could be housed at the university if there are more students.
AM Sreedharan, Director of Distance Education, University of Kannur inaugurated the Center. Jail Superintendent P Baburaj presided over the function.
